The Green Hotel and Callier-Scollard Violins: A Historic Connection

Summary of the Green Hotel and Its Connection to Callier Violins

The Green Hotel, later known as Castle Green, is one of Pasadena’s most iconic historic landmarks. Built in stages starting in the late 1800s, it was originally developed by Colonel George G. Green, a patent medicine entrepreneur from New Jersey. Featuring Moorish, Spanish, and Mission Revival architecture, the hotel became a luxurious resort destination, hosting prominent figures such as President Benjamin Harrison and Theodore Roosevelt.

Over time, the Green Hotel evolved from a grand hotel into apartments and private residences, with ongoing efforts to preserve its rich architectural and cultural heritage. Despite these changes, its historical significance remains a key part of Pasadena’s legacy.

More than 40 years ago, Paul Callier moved his violin shop from Los Robles to the Green Hotel, continuing the tradition of fine instrument craftsmanship in a location steeped in history. When I first started working there, many of the longtime residents had witnessed decades of Pasadena’s transformation—so much so that they jokingly avoided buying green bananas.

Below are some historic photos showcasing both the Green Hotel and the Callier Violin Shop’s place within this remarkable setting.
